OUTREACH SERVICES TO HOME BOUND, BLIND AND PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PATRONS:
Mailbox books is a program which allows home bound patrons to borrow both large print and regular print books and have them delivered to their home by postage free mail. Patrons who qualify for this free service may select specific titles or have the librarian select titles for them, using reading preferences that the patron indicates on the application. The Conyers-Rockdale Library System contracts with Dekalb County Public Library System to provide this service.
Talking Books for the Blind and Physically Handicapped is a free service that offers audio books on digital cartridge and special playback equipment that are sent to a person’s home. Patrons can request certain titles or have titles selected for them. Patrons must qualify for this service by filling out an application and having a certifying authority sign it, such as a licensed physician, social worker, etc.
A new service called BARD (Braille and Audio Reading download) Mobile App provides books, music and Braille materials that are available through Apple’s itunes store, and accessed with a patron’s personal device such as an iphone, ipad or ipod touch. BARD Mobile App provides a wider selection of material than the cartridges because it contains all content formerly available only on tape. There are nearly 50,000 books, magazines and music scores in audio and Braille formats. New selections are added daily. This is a free service for qualifying patrons.
